Putting Zen Teachings Into Practice: Yumen feeds Buddha to the dogs

Master Yunmen: From the Record of the Chan Master "Gate of the Clouds": https://www.amazon.com/Master-Yunmen-Record-Clouds-Classics/dp/1568360045/

Master Yunmen related [the legend according to which] the Buddha, immediately after his birth, pointed with one hand to heaven and with the other to earth, walked a circle in seven steps, looked at the four quarters, and said, "Above heaven and under heaven, I alone am the Honored One."

The Master said, "Had I witnessed this at the time, I would have knocked him dead with one stroke and fed him to the dogs in order to bring about peace on earth!"

.

ewk note: Religious people claim to study Zen, and in the same breath they will talk about this guru or that guru that "really inspires them with wisdom" while being "a ordinary person".

Yunmen is offering practical advice on how to practice Zen. Get rid of gurus. Don't go around pretend to be "inspired". Stop worshipping people you claim are "ordinary".

Why is this teachings so upsetting to religious people? Without a guru to lead them, they would have to walk a high wire without a net.
