I've heard the phrase "zazen is good for nothing" more than a few times by several Roshis. I've never quite understood this or known what to make of such a thought. =
I get that partly it's meant to have that kind of Zen attitude of poking you out of your entrenched thought patterns, but at the same time it's fiercely paradoxical in a practical sense. Maybe it's my Western sensibilities and grasping to the self, but why on earth would I bother making such an effort to practice zazen every day if it's "good for nothing"?
