Foyan Qingyuan [1067-1120]: The ultimate rule is to see your own mind clearly.

I will settle something for you right now: the ultimate rule is to see your own mind clearly. An ancient said, "The mind does not know itself, the mind does not see itself." So how can you see it clearly? Mind does not see mind; to get it, you must not see it as mind.

Foyan Qingyuan [1067-1120]

Wandering Ronin commentary:

  1. All of time and space and everything in the heavens is among the myriad things.
  2. The forms of all physical things are among the myriad things.
  3. Your very body, which will one day fail you, is within the realm of the myriad things.
  4. Your sense organs are all along the myriad things, including sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.
  5. Your brain itself and all of its inner workings are among the myriad things.
  6. Your thoughts about all of the myriad things remain among the myriad things.
  7. Nothing among the myriad things can traverse the Gateless Gate, so how does one cross?
