I can only say there are 2 reasons why psychedelics can help you understand zen enlightenment and it relates to gradual vs sudden enlightenment
For starters, your mind ceases conceptions and realizes how instant experience is, how free the mind already is. This is important because if you have experienced this then there is no need for gradual attainment, in fact this directly will also tell you that gradual attainers are only cycling into samsara more and more unless they realize this truth.
Now by no means will psychedelics enlighten you but they can help show you why gradual enlightenment can be a dangerous path within itself.
