Meta: Why do people who don't like Zen find themselves drawn to Dogen's cult, aka "Soto Buddhism"

There seems to be two separate things going on:

  1. Why are people drawn to cults? And yes, Dogen's cult, "Soto Buddhism" is a cult: /r/zen/wiki/sexpredators. We've had ordained people and long term monastery people in this forum. They didn't like Zen, but they really liked Dogen.

  2. Why are people who drop out of Dogen's cult interested in starting their own cults? Usually association with a scandal disqualifies people. None of these people base their "teaching" on a lineage or an ordination:

    • Philip Kapleau
    • Joko Beck
    • Toni Packer
    • /r/Zen's own Songhill
    • /r/Zen's own Zaddar/Zaddar1

Both groups dislike of Zen... but did that bring them to Dogen's church, or did they learn it there?
