The Real Shobogenzo: A new translation of the opening sermon of Sunface Buddha

1. Cleary: "So the Lankavatara sutra has Buddha’s talks on mind as its source; the method of denial is the method of teaching."

   • Bhikshu: "Therefore, in the Lankavatara Sutra, mind is the essence of all the Buddha's teachings, no gate is the Dharma-gate."

2. Cleary: "So the world is only mind; myriad forms are stamped by a single truth. Whatever form you see, you are seeing mind."

   • Bhikshu: "Therefore, the three realms are mind-only and 'all phenomena in the universe are marked by a single Dharma'."

3. Cleary: "If you comprehend the meaning of this, then you can dress and eat according to the season, developing the embryo of sagehood, spending the time according to events."

   • Bhikshu: "If one realizes this mind, then one can always wear one's robes and eat one's food."

4. Cleary: "Listen to my verse: The mind ground is explained according to the time And enlightenment too is simply peace; Free from obstruction, concrete or abstract, Creation itself does not create."

   • Bhikshu: "Listen to my verse: The mind-ground is always spoken of, Bodhi is also just peace. Wehn phenomena and the principle are all without obstruction, the very birth is identical with no-birth".
