Some people are liars; are Zen Masters liars?

We all agree that some people are liars; no conversation in human history hasn't been the target of frauds, plagiarists, and hucksters.

Citing sources has been a central theme in humanity's war against liars. The APA citation style was in large part just such a strategy, and still is.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that in modern times people who don't cite sources are liars. Questions of intention to mislead are no longer central to the argument about what lying is... without citations, we can fairly conclude that the person is lying.

I bring this up because Zen has long been attacked by Buddhists and other groups and the first volley of these attacks is always a failure to cite sources. Always.

Either you are ignorant, or you have a syllabus. If some admits they aren't ignorant, but can't immediately and readily provide a syllabus for their conversation, is a liar. There is no second option.

Now Foyan (remember Foyan? It's a forum about Foyan) said that Zen Masters are true friends, so what does that mean? How can we tell if Foyan is a liar or not?

One thing about the three texts written by Zen Masters, and the other "Zen Master approved" text, is that there are more citations than anything else.

So, there you have it.
