What was it like before language and writing?
"It is written" began to surpass "I give my word, my word is my bond", but then something else happened and the currency became debased: trash talk and "it's just a piece of paper". Do we want to get words "back to where they mean something"? Where they stand for more than power tripping?
What did the zen characters do with their words? Especially what did they do with written words?
For the typical currency to keep working in the way intended, it has to take on a value of a certain kind as in a "transmission" where there is an impact, an effect, an agreement, an admiration, a motivation, an attraction, a repulsion, which is to say, its putting a spell on us or others.
Spock had his "mind meld", an insight into the way the world was processed by others.
What is before "the world is processed"?
Zen has pointing. The use of words in zen is often the same as pointing. Other times its just to trip up the old patterns. Either way, in zen, a person grows up and out of the infatuation of words. So in zen, transmission is not by words.
You can recognize if a person can look at what was pointed at without doing a "mind meld". Is a person under the spell of words or not?
