Mazu's ‘When perceiving external forms, it is the same as perceiving the mind.’

Mazu:

_

"‘When perceiving external forms, it is the same as perceiving the mind.’ ”

_

見色即是見心。

_

_

Because this is will be a shorter one, we will be going more into the background of the characters themselves; the metaphors used to support the root ideas behind them.

_

R-o-u-n-d 6 here we come!

_

_

A.

  1. to see
  2. to meet; to see
  3. to appear; to seem
  4. to appear; to seem
  5. opinion, idea, view

_

As you can see, this character appears twice. It is very standard even in modern use. I think it provides a great beginner's start to the 'metaphor' behind supporting the verb within the characters.

_

目 (“eye”) + 儿 (“human”) – an eye on a pair of legs. Originally a human figure with a large eye for a head.

_

Can you picture it? A eye with a pair of legs? A 'moving eye'. You see?

'儿' is the character for 'human' because we stand upright. Get it? This will be important for the next character

_

B.

  1. color/colour; tint; hue; shade
  2. look; expression
  3. kind; sort
  4. feminine charm; beauty
  5. sexual; lewd
  6. (colloquial) perverted; being a pervert
  7. theatrical role
  8. metallic content
  9. die (a cube with numbers or symbols on each side and used in games of chance)

_

Now...this is the BIG one here..and we will be exploring it in depth:

_

First, let is go into it's 'metaphor':

Ideogrammic compound (會意): (“claw; hand”) + (“kneeling person”) – complexion.

_

As in, + =

_

B(a).

  1. claw (of animal, bird); talon; paw; nail
  2. to grab with claws
  3. claw-like object; foot (of an item)
  4. (derogatory or humorous) hand (of a person)

_

The important thing to remember with this is that it's not a human hand but an animal claw. A lowly grasping or clutching.

_

B(b):

  1. As Verb: tiết (to secrete, to emit)
  2. As Noun tiết (section period time, season)

_

It take a Giant post to get into the great depths...but I'll try to summarize.

_

First, remember '儿' is for 'standing upright' in the first character? and '卩' is for 'kneeling' in the second?

_

To lower ourselves, becoming animistic, to grab and grasp with 'claws' instead of hands at the "secretions' or 'emissions' that we witness:

_

The colors, the hues, the beauty, the sexual, the obscene, the theater, the dice in the game of chance.

_

This is Samsara and it's compulsions of grasping. It is above translated as "external forms."

_

Understand?

_

C.

  1. to come near to eat
  2. † to approach; to come near; to be near
  3. † to ascend; to go up; to assume office
  4. † prompted by the occasion
  5. † though; although
  6. † if; assuming
  7. † even if; even though
  8. † then
  9. † while
  10. † as soon as
  11. namely; that is; to be the same as; i.e.
  12. † promptly; quickly; immediately; at once
  13. † at present; today

_

We've gone over this character a few times before. So I'll assume you are familiar by now in it's context.

_

D.

  1. this; this thing
  2. (copulative) to be indicating that the subject and object are the same.
  3. a particle emphasizing the word following it.
  4. a particle showing agreement. In this meaning, 是 is stressed. truly; indeed.
  5. (only in compounds) true, correct

_

Self explanatory, isn't it?

_

E.

  1. Heart
  2. Mind
  3. thought; idea
  4. intention
  5. center; core

_

And you Definitely know this one by now..

_

Rather than add further commentary, I'll just leave you with this:

_

趙州、因僧問、如何是祖師西來意。

A monk asked Jõshû, "What is the meaning of Bodhidharma's coming to China?"

州云、庭前栢樹子。

Jõshû said, "The oak tree in the garden."
