Mazu:
_
"“Those that seek the truth should not seek anything."
_
夫求法者, 應無所求。
_
This is going to be another long one..but we got this! Ready!?
_
Round 3!
_
A. 夫
- male adult; man
- husband
- person
- manual worker
_
In other words..."You".
_
B. 求
- to seek; to look for
- to beg; to request; to implore
- to request; to ask for
- to require; to demand
- to to covet; to seek (fame, riches)
- to attract
_
To seek. Easy, right? I'll elaborate below with it..
_
C. 法
- law; rule; regulation; statute
- norm; standard; model; example
- (Buddhism) dharma; principle of the universe; teachings of Buddha
- method; way; solution
- to imitate; to emulate
_
...The 'Object' you wish to find, conform to. The Law, The Idea, The Model, The Principle, The "Dharma"...Harmony with "IT".
_
Understand?
_
D. 者
- (classical Chinese) used at the end of a command
- (classical Chinese) used after a term, to mark a pause before defining the term
- (classical Chinese) used after a term, to mark a pause before defining the term
_
Translation: Mazu says "Pay Attention to This!"
_
E. 應
- to answer; to reply
- to permit; to promise
- to agree; to echo; to go along with
- to handle; to deal with
- (of words, etc.) to come true; to be confirmed
- to suit; to fit
- to accept
_
Does this need explanation?
Mazu asks if you can accept, permit, or even handle, the following:
_
F. 無
- (literary or Hakka or Min) to not have something; there is not
- Negation particle preceding verbs and adjectives. not
- without; -less; un-
- nothing; nil
_
...We know this one well, don't way? This is the "No" for "No-Gate". Mu!
It is simply a negation. Nothing more, nothing less.
_
"No."
_
G. 所
- place; location
- institute
- Classifier for buildings, schools, hospitals, etc. ⇒ all nouns using this classifier
- Prefix attached to verbs to form noun phrases, meaning a person or thing that is the object of that verb(( (ie, to whom or to which **an action is done).
_
So this is a character to describe a definite 'place'. What makes a place unique? What happens there. What is 'Done' there. The Purpose of the place
_
...Do you see how it describes a 'place' that 'does' a particular something?
At at the 'place' of a Hospital, 'medicine/care' is given (doing/verb). At the 'place' of a School, 'teaching/learning' happens (doing/verb). Understand?
_
H. 求
- to seek; to look for
- to beg; to request; to implore
- to request; to ask for
- to require; to demand
- to to covet; to seek (fame, riches)
- to attract
_
So, to 'seek out' a 'place' to 'do' a 'particular' something. Get it?
_
So, let's try putting it together!
_
You who Want Truth/Dharma (Pay Attention to this!) Accept There is NO 'Particular Place of Doing" To Seek.
_
Let's put it one more way..
_
A person seeks the dharma. Listen! Accept there is nowhere to seek.
__
So how about seeking to end seeking?
Seeking to end thinking?
Seeking to end negative emotions?
Seeking to get rid of yourself? Or the stuff about yourself or your world that you do not like?
_
You aren't going to find a 'particular' answer to that with the Zen Masters...they are a pretty diverse bunch.
_
To say there is 'No Particular Place of Doing to Seek' is the Exact Same as saying "There Isn't a Gate to Find'.
_
Understand?
