Mazu's 'No need to exert in Zen. No right or wrong Way.'

Mazu:

_

"Ordinary mind denotes (a state of mind in which there are) no (deliberate) actions, no (ideas about) right and wrong, no grasping and discarding, no (notions of) annihilation and permanence, no ordinary and sacred." (Poceski, "Records of Mazu", p. 301)

_

"What is meant by Ordinary Mind? No activity, no right or wrong, no grasping or rejecting, neither terminable nor permanent, without worldly or holy. " (Cheng Chien Bhikshu {Poceski again}, Sun-Faced Buddha, p.38 )

_

"What is meant by ordinary mind? No contrived behavior, no clinging to ideas of right and wrong, no grasping or rejecting, free of “temporary” or “permanent,” free of “worldly” or “sacred.” (Satyavayu, Encounter Dialogues and Discourses of Mazu Daoyi, https://terebess.hu/zen/mazu.html#wu )

_

" What is an ordinary mind? It means no intentional creation and action, no right or wrong, no grasping or rejecting, no terminable or permanent, no profane or holy. " (Jinhua Jia, The Hongzhou School of Chan Buddhism, p.68)

_

謂平 常心、無造作、無是非、無取捨、無斷常、無凡無聖

_

_

Since this would be an especially long one, I am going to keep it short by just focusing on:

"...no (deliberate) actions, no (ideas about) right and wrong,"

_

In other words:

無造作、無是非

_

Round. 7. Go!

_

_

A.

  1. (literary or Hakka or Min) to not have something; there is not
  2. Negation particle preceding verbs and adjectives. not
  3. without; -less; un-
  4. nothing; nil

_

...We still know this one well, don't we? This is the "No" for "No-Gate". Mu!

It is simply a negation. Nothing more, nothing less.

_

"No"

_

B.

  1. to make; to build
  2. to manufacture; to make; to produce
  3. to create; to invent; to establish
  4. to make up; to fabricate
  5. to institute
  6. era; period
  7. crop; harvest
  8. (law) party concerned in the suit

_

Now, it is this and the following character that will shed some light of the "work hard!" idea and translation from a few Zen Masters that some community members get hung up on as an excuse for their desire 'to constantly strive and struggle for future attainments' and force a relation to it with Zen.

_

C..

First pronunciation:

  1. to get up (from a place)
  2. to get up (in the morning) and go to work
  3. † to begin to grow; to come into being
  4. † to arise; to come about; to happen; to occur; to break out
  5. to do; to perform; to carry out
  6. to work; to exert oneself
  7. to make; to manufacture
  8. to compose; to write
  9. † to brace oneself; to boost 10.† to feign; to pretend
  10. to work as; to serve as
  11. to build; to construct
  12. † to play; to perform
  13. † to emit; to give out
  14. to start; to launch
  15. † to be like; similar
  16. work; composition; article
  17. † affair; matter
  18. † measure; action

Second pronunciation:

  1. to go to; to arrive at; to reach
  2. to visit; to pay a visit; to call to pay respect
  3. to achieve; to attain; to accomplish
  4. achievement; accomplishment; attainment

_

..As you can see, this got translated above as:

  1. "no (deliberate) actions"
  2. "no activity"
  3. "No contrived behavior"
  4. "No intentional creation and activity"

_

...I like the combination of "Make-Get up". I'll share a Bankei story at the end for it.

_

D.

  1. This; this thing
  2. (copulative) to be -( indicating that the subject and object are the same.)
  3. A particle emphasizing the word following it.
  4. A particle showing agreement. In this meaning, 是 is stressed. truly; indeed.
  5. (only in compounds) true, correct

_

No correct Way. No right Way.

_

E.

  1. not be; is not; not
  2. wrong; incorrect
  3. to reproach; to blame
  4. (colloquial) Used to insist on something. to have got to; to simply must

_

Nothing you must do.

_

No incorrect Way.

_

Understand?

_

_

What about those who insist you do something in the name of Zen? Are they speaking for Mazu or for themselves?

_

_

...The Master (Bankei) then went on to say:

_

"Once, while I was in Dosha's assembly, a monk was sleeping seated in meditation.

_

Another monk there suddenly struck him, but I scolded him for doing this.

_

'Why should you hit someone who's pleasantly sleeping?' I said. 'When that monk is sleeping, do you think he's a different person!?'

_

"I'm not encouraging people to sleep, but to hit them because they do is terribly wrong. Here in my place now, I don't allow that sort of thing.

_

While I'm not encouraging people to sleep, I don't hit them or scold them for doing so. I don't scold or praise sleeping, and I don't scold or praise not sleeping.

_

Whether people happen to be asleep or awake, just let them be as they are. When they're asleep, they're sleeping in the Buddha Mind they were awake in; when they're awake, they're awake in the Buddha Mind they were sleeping in. When people are asleep, they're sleeping in the Buddha Mind; when they're awake, they're awake in the Buddha Mind. They're always abiding in the Buddha Mind,

_

and there's not a moment when they're ever abiding in anything else.

_

So it's mistaken to think that when a person is asleep he turns into something different.

_

If you believe that people abide in the Buddha Mind only when they're awake and that when they're asleep they turn into something different, that's not the ultimate truth, but an endless transformation."
