Fengxue's "Single Atom"

Fengxue said, "If you set up a single atom, the nation flourishes. If you don't set up a single atom, the nation perishes."

Xuedou held up his staff and said, "Are there any mendicants who will die the same and live the same?"

- Cleary's translation of the Book of Serenity, case 34

Alright, I'm a little bit drunk. I tend to make a bit of a fool of myself at times like this. That can be a good thing. But I've been a bit stuck on this one for a while, and I'm looking for a hint.

Some of the commentary suggests that if the nation perishes, the peasants are cool with that.

Also, I'm sure Xuedou is doing the usual Zen Master punk thing and neither setting up an atom nor not setting up an atom. Setting up not setting up an atom. Or something similarly incomprehensible to the intellect.

Other than that, I ain't got much. It might be tricky for me because it's a little bit social, and, as you can see just by how many times I use the word 'I' in comments and posts, I'm a little bit self-oriented.

Living and dying the same - is that sharing the buddha mind seal? A mind that does not make distinctions, except to be able to tell black from white?
