[Old case]
Because Fayan saw a monk coming to consult with him he pointed at a screen. At that time there were two monks who together went and rolled up the screen. The master said, “One has got it, one has missed it.”
Miaozhi Kuo’s verse
One got it, one missed it,
Who do you rely on to understand this?
The flint spark does not get through,
The lightning ash does not reach.
To learn Zen's secret you must approach a good teacher for instruction. The monk wanted instruction. But did Fayan really point at a screen? Oh, sure there were two monks rolling up the screen. But when Fayan said: One has got it, one has missed it, was this really about the two monks? Permit me to improve Miaozhi verse:
One got it, one missed it,
What is the source Fayan's words?
You missed it! No flint spark [satori].
The Vajra mind did not reach you either.
