Disclaimer: This is going to be a highly-biased and inflammatory original post for some people, but I strongly feel that this has to be done and people have to take a stand. I am a lifelong liberal-to-moderate Democrat, and I feel that that it is every eligible voters responsibility to get out and vote today, no matter which side of the isle you are on [but especially Democrats, haha].
My question for the Zen forum is this: as an American Zen Buddhist, do you identify as a Democrat, Republican or Independent? I've always felt that Zen tends to attract mostly open-minded and more liberal people, because Zen is more of a spiritual as opposed to a religious path. Spirituality involves a certain sort of depth, truth and awareness that most 'religious' people [read: Christians] obviously don't tend to have.
No side of the Democratic/Republican isle is without error or controversy, but I feel that something ugly and evil has been brewing in the United States on the Republican side for a little over a decade now. Ours is no longer one country; it is divided along so many lines that we are literally breaking at the seams. Liberal versus conservative, rich versus poor, upper class versus middle class, business versus the working class, white versus black; where in the world is the unity that this country was promised by the founding fathers? Have we lost our collective minds?
I'm fully aware that neither political party is beyond reproach, but there is a reason that I've always identified as a Democrat. I believe that there should be some unity for us as a country, as we are all supposed to be on the same team. I don't want to see any of my fellow human beings get bankrupted by an unregulated health care system just because they got hurt or sick. I believe that the Government should provide assistance to manage the costs of medical insurance for those that need it. I don't believe that social security should be stripped away from people at the age that they need it the most. I believe in the sanctity of a woman having a right to determine what is best for her own body, and to freely have the right to choose. I believe that the rich have a greater proportional responsibility to give back and help others as opposed to the burden being on people that can afford it the least. Republicans quite obviously believe in none of this; why in the world should they be supported as they continue to try to take away more and more from everyone, only to give it all to those whose cups already runneth over?
This is a call to arms; please do what you can to stop this travesty of high office and get out there and vote. You do have a right to vote, but at this crucial time it is entering the territory of responsibility as well. We have to push back against Trump and the Republicans who want to tear this country apart and hand the pieces over to the rich and their big business cronies. If you have any concern for your fellow citizens; if you believe in the way of having strength of character, honor and dignity; if you believe that the greater good should triumph over base selfishness and evil, you should vote Democrat on every single name that comes in front of you, period.
