STEP 1 - Read and study at least one book on Zen, particularly from a master of the original Ch'an lineage. Make sure that you can remember where to find quotes from in the book that you will need, as this will be very important later.
STEP 2 - Build up a strong and unassailable foundation on what you learned, so that no one can tell you otherwise. Argue from a position of absolute authority, and shut down any argument that comes your way. Keep believing in your way; everyone else is wrong.
STEP 3 - Stop in place immediately in your understanding of Zen. If you can argue well without being swayed, then you can claim total enlightenment. Don't let anyone upset your balance in what you know, and don't doubt the foundation you built. You're done!
