National Teacher Zhong asked an imperial attendant monk, “What does ‘Buddha’ mean?” The imperial attendant said, “It means enlightened.” The National Teacher said, “Was Buddha ever deluded?” The imperial attendant said, “No.” The National Teacher said, “Then what’s the need for enlightenment?” The imperial attendant had no reply.
Dahui said in his behalf, “If you don’t plunge into the water, how can you be promoted over others?”

ewk note: The Four Statements say "seeing the self nature, becoming Buddha". Blyth says it means "becoming enlightened", and here it is, even an imperial attendant a thousand years ago is familiar with that meaning. Who can doubt it? I mean, other than the faux Buddhists in this forum?
