Case 32 of The Mumonkan: A Non-Buddhist Philosopher Questions the Buddha
A non-Buddhist philosopher said to the Buddha, "I do not ask for words; I do not ask for non-words."
The Buddha just sat there.
The philosopher said admiringly, "The World-honored One, with his great mercy, has blown away the clouds of my illusion and enabled me to enter the Way."
And after making bows, he took his leave.
Then Ananda asked the Buddha, "What did he realize, to admire you so much?"
The World-honored One replied, "A fine horse runs even at the shadow of the whip."
Wandering Ronin commentary: What good is philosophy along the way? Who is it that walks about, bringing troubles before the World Honored One? Let him speak, let him speak, there is so much to do. Look everyone; this philosopher had a problem! The snake then bites its own tale, swallowing his story to become a dragon. The Buddha did nothing but present his existence; somehow all problems were resolved. Who did the bowing, and who could even take their leave? Is it possible that some among you have missed the horse galloping in the clouds?
