Emperor Xiaozong of the Song dynasty asked, “How can one escape samsara?”
Xiatang said, “If one does not awaken to the Mahāyāna path, one will never be able to escape.”
The emperor asked, “How can one attain awakening?”
Xiatang said, “The [self] nature possessed from the outset [i.e., the innately pure mind]—put in the months and years to refine it, and there is no way one will not awaken."
essentialsaltsbook notechandex - The emperor is pretty off-base, worrying about 'escape', and all. So, Xiatang makes it about awakening, and by extension, refinement. Some oppose refinement, saying that they already possess a pure mind. This is failing to see that you can only refine that which you already possess.
