What is the importance of experiences?

Hi. This is my first post here. I have been practicing zen for a bit more than 4 years. I am reading Getting the Buddha Mind: On the Practice of Chan Retreat and the author says that the goal of a 7-day retreat is to have a buddha-mind experience. Such an experience is acknowledged by the master and called "transmission".

To me, zen is more about being mindful of the present regardless of how common or un-special it feels. Practice itself is the way in my eyes and thus I can relate to the concept of "practice-realization". So what's up with experiences and dhyanas and all that stuff? I can't recall any single instant like that during my practice, and I feel I shouldn't look for it. Also I thought transmission was more acknowledging a deep understanding after many years of practice, not a one-time thing during a retreat.

Please help me shed some light on these "experiences".
