To preface this, I am here because I feel there is much I can learn from this community. I believe this format may be a beneficial style of communication. I wish to ask you all questions, but do not as yet know which the right questions to ask would be. So defeat me in Dharma battle, so that my ignorance may be cut down!
Not Zen? (Repeat Question 1) Suppose a person denotes your lineage and your teacher as Buddhism unrelated to Zen, because there are several quotations from Zen patriarchs denouncing seated meditation. Would you be fine admitting that your lineage has moved away from Zen and if not, how would you respond?
I don't have a lineage. Though I suppose ultimately I am less interested in what is and isn't Zen, and am more interested in what is and isn't truth. Though if you press me I won't be able to tell you what truth is. Maybe its the same thing?
I suppose I am not convinced either way in regards to seated meditation. I have read quotes on both sides of the contention. For now I do what seems to work. Whatever that means.
What's your text? (Repeat Question 2) What text, personal experience, quote from a master, or story from zen lore best reflects your understanding of the essence of zen?
No text, no understanding. I am still caught up in duality of non-duality. Maybe I am the monk telling his master there is no body and the master proceeds to twist my nose until I yell out in protest.
Dharma low tides? (Repeat Question 3) What do you suggest as a course of action for a student wading through a "dharma low-tide"? What do you do when it's like pulling teeth to read, bow, chant, or sit?
This is a tricky question for me. I think that there is no difference between the tides. But it sure doesn't seems that is the case. Maybe I am looking for the answer for this.
