In the summer of the first year of Jõtei, Ekai was in Ryûshõ Temple and as head monk worked with the monks, using the cases of the ancient masters as brickbats to batter the gate and lead them on according to their respective capacities.
In the summer of the first Year of Jotei (1228) Ekai was in Ryusho (why is he talking third person?) In East China. As head monk he taught the learners there using the koans of the ancient masters like brickbats to batter at the gate, and leading them on to their special capacity.
So are koans brickbats that batter the no-gate? To what, break it? Or is it futile. Or are koans like brickbats for Mumon to hit the gate with and have people see how he wields them so they can see what a master does???????????? Hi.
