Baiyun Duan 64: Xuansha's Person With Three Disabilities

Master Xuansha Shibei addressed the crowd, saying, “The old adepts from every direction expended their speech to benefit living beings. Yet, if some are like those who are unable to see, hear, or speak, having three kinds of disability, how do you communicate with them? If you pick up an awl or stand up a whisk, they can see neither. Just the same, speak to them, and their ears will not hear, and their mouths are also unable to respond. By such means, communication is impossible, and the Buddhadharma is completely without effect.”

At that time, there was a monk who came forward and said, “These people with three kinds of disability, does even the Master allow them to discuss or not?” The Master said, “Yes—what did you want to discuss?”

The monk said some parting formalities and left. The Master said, “Wrong! Wrong!”

Retreat, advance, two facing together to argue—
We met by chance, and it’s difficult to turn away.
A spring breeze suddenly shakes the courtyard,
And we turn to see the countless petals falling.
