In a recent podcast recording ewk brought up an interesting idea. The idea being that what if we took Zen masters at their word with what they say about us and our Self-nature and looked for ways in which we could prove them right? So for this post I'm going to list some of the things Zen masters state about our inherent and presently functioning Self-nature and ask in what ways we could see this in our daily life, or how we could go about confirming them? Here is the list:
Mr. Bao: As my body is empty, all things are empty.
Joshu: Having nothing inside, seeking nothing outside
Huineng: Inwardly immovable and outwardly unobstructed
All of them: Already complete
Bankei and Huineng: Self as illumination
Hongzhi: The mind being empty, it is all-embracing; its luminosity being wondrous, it is precisely apt and impartial.
My take is that if we're going to recognize these things it's not about practicing methods or believing in doctrine and concepts. It's about looking. Paying attention. Inquiring.
