汝看亮座主是蜀中人。Thou observe: a brilliant seat master was [from] among the people of Shu.1
解講三十二本經論。[There, he] comprehended and lectured on the doctrines of 32 foundational sutras.
於江西講次。In Jiangxi, he lectured next.
來見開元寺老宿。Arriving at Kaiyuan monastery, he met an Old Veteran.2
宿問。見說座主解講經。是否。The Veteran asked, "Has the seat master met with me to explain [his] comprehension by lecturing about a sutra, or not?"
主云。不敢。The master said, "I dare not."
宿云。將什麼講。The Veteran asked, "What will you lecture about?"
主云。將心講。The master said, "I will lecture about Mind."
宿云。心如工技兒。"Mind is like a workman of little skill,
意如和伎者。Intention, comparatively, is like a talented one.
爭解講得。I dispute [that you] comprehend [what you] lecture about."
主云。莫是虗空講得。The master said, "Emptiness cannot be lectured about."
宿云。却是虗空講得。"Nevertheless, nothing is being lectured about," the Veteran replied.
主拂袖便行。The master then shook his sleeves3 and left.
宿召座主。The Veteran called to the seat master.
主回首。The master turned his head to look back.
宿云。是什麼。The Veteran asked, "What is it?"
主便開悟。At this, the master's realization bloomed.
兄弟。看他快利麼。"Brothers, see how smooth he is?!"
Notes:
1. Shu is short for Sichuan; a province. The "seat master" being referred to is the young Nanquan.
2. Kaiyuan monastery, in Jiangxi, was Mazu's monastery. The Old Veteran is decidedly Mazu.
3. A gesture expressing anger and disapproval.
