Master Lingyun Zhiqin awakened to the truth upon seeing peach blossoms. He wrote a verse that says:
For the past thirty years I have sought a swordsman;
How many times have the leaves fallen and sprouted?
Yet, from the time I saw peach blossoms once,
Up to now, I have never doubted again.
Guishan said, "Become aware of insight by following causes, and you never backslide."
Xuansha said, "For the truth to be deep, you must examine carefully—surely my brother has not been completely thorough."
[0299b09] 靈雲勤禪師。因見桃花悟道。有偈曰。三十年來尋劍客。幾回落葉又抽枝。自從一見桃花後。直至如今更不疑。溈山曰。從緣悟達。永無退失。玄沙曰。諦當甚諦當。敢保老兄未徹在。
What about after Lingyun awakened?
No one who wasn't thorough could debate him—
A thousand ages at the foot of Huashan,
How could you know Pan Lang rode the donkey backwards?
