A monk asked Master Dasui Fazhen, "When the kalpa of fire burns through, and the universe is destroyed, I was wondering, will this be destroyed or not?"
The Master said, "Destroyed."
"Then let it be destroyed."
"Let it be."
The monk did not agree, and later went to Touzi to raise what had been said. Touzi loaded some incense and offered it into the distance, saying, "An ancient Buddha of the Western Chuan has been born into the world"—then speaking to the monk he said, "Return quickly and repent."
The monk returned to Dasui, but the Master had died, so he returned again to Touzi, who had also died.
[0299a17] 大隨法真禪師因僧問。劫火洞然。大千俱壞。未審。者個壞不壞。師曰。壞。僧曰。恁麼則隨他去也。師曰。隨他去。僧不肯。後到投子舉前話。子裝香遙禮曰。西川古佛出世。謂其僧曰。汝速回去懺悔。僧回大隨。師已遷化。再至投子。子亦遷化。
Good or not, the tongue has no bone,
When you suddenly look up, the eyes bulge—
Dasui is still in the midst of a fiery kalpa,
And worlds simmer and stew, wails and sighs .
[0299a22] 壞與不壞舌無骨。驀面看時眼突出。大隨猶在劫火中。天下熬熬謾啾唧。
