Baiyun Duan 48: Linji's Blind Donkey

When Linji was about to die, he gave a public address, saying, "After I die, don't let my Treasury of the True Dharma Eye be extinguished."

Sansheng came forward and said, "How could I dare allow the Master's Treasury of the True Dharma Eye to be extinguished!?"

Linji asked, "Later, if someone were to ask you, what would you say?"

Sansheng immediately shouted. Linji said, "Who'd've thought my Treasury of the True Dharma Eye'd be extinguished by a blind donkey."

[0299a11] 臨濟將示寂。謂眾曰。吾滅後。不得滅却吾正法眼藏。三聖出曰。爭敢滅却和尚正法眼藏。師曰。已後有人問汝。向他道什麼。聖便喝。師曰。誰知。吾正法眼藏。向者瞎驢邊滅却。

The thunder that split Mt. Tai was not brute,
The moon that shone on the ocean was not bright—
A blind donkey has extinguished the True Dharma Eye,
And all of Great Tang is filled with the sound of wailing and grief.

[0299a15] 擘彼泰山雷未猛。照開滄海月非光。瞎驢滅却正法眼。直得哀聲滿大唐。
