Baiyun Duan 47: Linji's "The Abbot Selling Rice"

Linji asked the temple abbot, "From where have you been coming and going?"

"In town, selling yellow rice."

"Did you sell it all?"

"I sold it all."

Linji used his staff to scratch a line in the ground and asked, "Did you sell this when you were there?"

The abbot immediately shouted. Linji hit him.

The cook arrived, and after Linji had recounted what was said before, the cook said, "It is unlikely the abbot understood what the Master meant."

Linji said, "What about you, then?" The cook bowed. Linji hit him too.

[0299a05] 臨濟問院主。甚處去來。主曰。州中糶黃米來。師曰。糶得盡麼。曰糶得盡。師以拄杖劃一劃曰。還糶得者箇麼。主便喝。師便打。典座至。師舉前話。座曰。院主不會和尚意。師曰。汝又作麼生。座禮拜。師亦打。

Holding up the treasure sword, edge as sharp as frost—
On how many battlefields has it cut down the barbarian kings?
With passion and reason, divided into three parts,
Along with cold light, shining alongside the Dipper.
