In a public address, Linji said, "You people, and all people, have inside your lump of red flesh an actual person without rank, frequently coming in and going out of your face."
At that time, there was a monk who asked, "What is an 'actual person of no rank?' "
Linji immediately struck him and said, "The actual person of no rank—why is it such a dried-turd wipe?"
[0298c24] 臨濟示眾曰。汝等諸人。赤肉團上。有一無位真人。常向面門出入。時有僧問。如何是無位真人。師便打云。無位真人。是甚麼乾屎橛。
An endless spring breeze roasts the world,
Where the mist and clouds veil the mountains—
If you can't find the actual person of no rank,
Observe the falling petals drift in the current once more.
[0299a03] 春風浩浩烘天地。是處山藏煙靄裡。無位真人不可尋。落花又見隨流水。
