When we last left off, Nanquan had concluded his lecture and dismissed the crowd, however no one was yet willing to leave.
Part 2: The Encore
The Master said, "The holy fruit1 is as if great and formidable.
[You] must not measure [yourselves against or as] 'great people', yet how can you not?
I, even, am not [so great as] him'.2
He, even, is not [so great as] me'.
How can he contend with me?'
Other 'sutra discourse specialists' expound 'methods' as being in the capacity of [practicing the] 'highest standards',
calling [them] engaging in 'the samadhi of utmost principle'; 'the samadhi of utmost righteousness'.
It resembles [to the] old monk being 'advanced forward' by people instructing 'return to the root' and even 'go to the source'.
How many understand this way?
A disaster!"
Notes:
1. 聖果 (holy fruit) The perfect state achieved by Buddhist practice. 聖 can also mean 'sage' or 'the greatest master of a certain art or skill', and 果 means fruit, as in 'result; fruit of your labor'.
2. 渠 (him/he) is a pronoun, but also means 'great; big'.
