Guishan withholds something from Xiangyan and in this withholding Xiangyan attains true understanding himself. This is what I find to be the frustrating part of Zen--there's a mysterious understanding that transcends verbal explanation and personal effort won't reveal it.
Zen Masters instantly see through the fakery of people pretending they've understood. How could anyone pretend that their sitting meditation cult compares to a piece of tile hitting bamboo?
But so long as they do and come here they will get called out.
