Master Kaixian Zhi said to a group,
Aim and instruction are provisional expressions; Buddhas and patriarchs are imposed terms.
Bankei says the term Buddha and Unborn are already one or two levels removed from the real thing. The words and concepts are not the thing.
Receiving instruction and communicating mind are both vanities; seeking reality and searching for truth get even further off.
Nansen told Joshu to aim the mind is to move further from enlightenment.
If you take your self and your own mind to be ultimate, there is necessarily something else and someone else in contrast.
Huangpo says that enlightenment is "a perception as sudden as blinking that subject and object are one". Perhaps setting up and believing concepts such as self and other leads to opposition between them.
At that time a monk asked, “What would be right?”
He said, “’Right’ means there is ‘wrong.’”
“How does one gain entry?”
“When were you ever outside?”
More denial of opposing concepts and a mention of Zen's inherent enlightenment as the last line.
This case is jam packed with common Zen themes. Very economical!
