Sayings of Nanquan, 1.7

1.7

師問僧。夜來好風。The Master asked a monk, "Did a pleasing wind come last night?"
云。夜來好風。[The monk] said, "A pleasing wind came last night."
師云。吹折門前一株松。The Master asked, "Did the blowing snap the trunk of the pine tree by the front gate?"
僧云。吹折門前一株松。"The blowing snapped the trunk of the pine tree by the front gate."
又問一僧云。夜來好風。Another monk also asked, "[About the] pleasing wind that came last night;"
云。是甚麼風。"What is the [nature of the] wind?"
師云。吹折門前一株松。The Master said, "The blowing snapped the trunk of the pine tree by the front gate."
云。是甚麼松。[The monk] asked, "What is the [nature of the] pine tree?"
師云。一得一失。The Master said, "One gains, one loses."1

Note:
1. Fayan makes this same remark in Case 26 of Wumen's Checkpoint (The Gateless Gate) after two monks roll up a blind. Nanquan said it first.
