Apparently, Nanquan Puyuan has an 'Essential Sayings Record'. Hurrah, hurrah! The credit goes to u/surupamaerl2 for finding it. Since there isn't an English version to read yet and I'm too curious and impatient to wait for someone more qualified to make one, I'm going to be working through it in sections and sharing whatever I find.
The sections will be posted beside the original Chinese for ease of comparison. To anyone else in the forum who is more fluent in Chinese or just handy with a dictionary, your pointing out of anything I may have missed, or suggestions for how any lines might be improved would all be greatly appreciated.
Section 1.1
師諱普願。The name of the deceased Master is Puyuan.
鄭州王氏子也。From Zhengzhou, his family name was Wang.
示眾云。王老師賣身去也。還有人買麼。Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said, "Master Wang sells himself off like a whore. Anyone still buying?"
時有僧出眾云。某甲買。A monk came forward from the crowd and said, "I'll be the first to buy."
師云。不作貴。不作賤。你作麼生買。The Master said, "Don't take me for expensive, don't take me for cheap. What price do you take me for?"
僧無對。The monk had no reply.
