In the Diamond Sutra, it says that if people of character are belittled, it is because those people's past lives have a history of wrongful conduct, from which they have fallen into evil paths. Because they are looked down upon in this life, the wrongs of previous lives are therefore wiped away, and they will manage to attain anuttara samyak-saṃbodhi.1
Water does not wash water, who doesn't know this?
The whirlwind was always too still to be driven forth—
If you can count a thousand days on the calendar,
You can avoid the inspector's palm pushing you on.
1 Supreme, universal enlightenment.
