zen and scholarship

Hey guys. So I've read on this subreddit on people saying how zen emphasizes scholarship.

I was wondering what to make of these several quotes. On the surface, they seem to suggest rather that Zen is NOT scholarly, as words can not be of any help to anyone in the first place.

In the dialog between Nansen and Joshu, Joshu asks:

Can [path] be studied?

Nansen replies: If you try to study, you will be far away from it.

Tokusan also "burned to ashes his commentaries on the sutras" and said "however abstruse the teachings are, in comparison with the enlightenment they are like a single hair to the great sky. However profound the complicated knowledge of the world, compared to enlightenment" it is nothing.

On an unrelated note, what does Kyozan mean when he says: "The truth of Mahayana teaching is transcended, above words and thoughts."
