Zen under the gun is the translation of a successive lineage of teachers starting with Hengchuan.
Later, while the monk was riding a mule across a bridge, suddenly he was thrown off. As he got up he said:
I have a bright jewel.
Long locked up within sensory afflictions.
Now the sensory dusts are gone and the light is born
Shining on the mountains and rivers and myriad blossoms.
"This realization flowed out from his breast to cover heaven and earth: he did not attain it from anyone else.
"Later on, Yangqi asked [his student] Baiyun, 'Your original teacher [the master of Yushan] had an enlightenment verse: please recite it for me.' "After Baiyun quoted it. Yangqi laughed. "Baiyun asked, 'What's wrong with it that makes you laugh. master? Yangqi said. 'Have you ever seen an exorcism to expel plague? Your teacher wanted people to laugh, but you are afraid when people laugh. At this, Baiyun had an insight.
"We won't discuss Yangqi's laugh-when Baiyun had insight from this, what truth did he find?

When people went to see Zen Masters it was obvious what they wanted; but that's not always why people come in here.
