Zen under the gun: bowing to no-practice

In a talk to the assembly, Hengchuan said:

"In our school, we have nothing, no teaching, no method, to give to people. Bodhidharma's coming from the west was just to bear witness, that's all. Each and every person is inherently complete.

"Coming down through countless ages to today, turning and twisting and looking up and looking down, responding to potentials, receiving beings, shitting and pissing, going in and out of birth-and-death, there has never been the slightest lack or surplus. "When he met Bodhidharma the great teacher Huike just bowed three times and stood where he was: later he succeeded to the station of patriarch.

.

"Just put to rest the mentality of frantic seeking, and the fun damental realm will spontaneously appear. How can you put it to rest? If you want to put it to rest, you will not be able to put it to rest. Twenty-four hours a day, whether you are walking, standing. sitting, or lying down-this is where you put it to rest.

"It's like Yajnadatta: looking into the wrong side of a mirror, he wrongly thought he had lost his head, and frantically went searching for it. Where the seeking mind is put to rest, there are no concerns. A buddha is a person without concerns.

.

Welcome! ewk comment: People get upset when they find out authentic Zen doesn't have a practice, nothing to produce attainments. People get upset that there aren't any attainments. People get upset that there is an enlightenment, they get upset that it's permanent, but you don't earn it and it doesn't make you a teacher.

Look at all these things they are concerned with!

How can they pretend to be Buddhas?
