Was it Huang Bo who said that you should not behave against moral principles even when you walk the Way, or you will become part of the devil's army?
Turning freely, there is nothing stopping us from doing so.
Perhaps he was stating a fact rather than a precept. A conceptual statement within conventional truth.
Nevertheless, how can we not care about the practical side of the matter and just let people do as they wish? What if someone uses their freedom to cause suffering? Do students of the Way know no moral judgment?
Don't tell me about the innate good of people. There are monsters out there.
