There are few Zen Masters out there are so captivating--at a distance--to Western Buddhists yet so, so, sooo toxic up close like Zhaozhou. Since they can't even get beyond him saying "No" or putting a pair of sandals on his head we've got to the point that anything Zhaozhou insctructs them on will be sure to lend them a hand...right?
A monk asked, "What is above even [Vairocana] Buddha?"
[Zhaozhou] said, "I am below your feet."
The monk said, "Master, why are you below my feet?"
[Zhaozhou] said, "Because you do not understand 'above' in the first place."
Ok.
Now one of you out there on the /r/Zen subreddit, give us a lecture on how to truly understand the meaning of Zhaozhou being below your feet without getting stepped on.
