So why would people say otherwise?
The first thing to note is that nobody who says this ever compares anything like Four Statements of Zen to anything Taoist, let alone provide any kind of Taoist system of thought based on texts.
Why? Because Taoism isn't really available in the West... the Western Taoist is just another kind of new age spirituality with no fixed doctrine.
Which is exactly why so many Buddhists are eager to link Zen and Taoism... in an attempt to discredit Zen.
Find me anyone anywhere on Reddit who can prove otherwise... I'd ask for academic papers but no such thing ever existed.
