Welcome! ewk comment: Is that fair?
What about when you meet somebody who gave up on their dreams and is bitter, ashamed, and afraid? Are they really "living"?
What about someone who is cowardly, and can't have an honest conversation? Someone who never opens their heart to other people, to society, to culture, to art? Are they really "living"?
What about someone who has never fully loved someone else, never devoted themselves unselfishly to the care of another... someone whose days, hours, weeks, months, years, are all a desperate attempt at distractions and escapes and excuses... is that a person who is really "alive"?
It seems like there is a lot of room for "dead even though alive" even from the perspective of an average ordinary person... let alone a Zen Master who publicly answers questions and is publicly accountable for those answers.
