I had heard it when I was a child, but I can't find the source. It was something about a novice visiting a palace and being given a cup of tea or water or something and asked to tour the palace without spilling a drop.
focusing on the beverage and not spilling the novice didn't experience any of the wonders of the palace, when later asked what he had seen.
googling around I find a similar story about a prisoner with a vessel of oil who would be executed if he spilled a drop traversing a highway, and confessing he had seen nothing on the highway (for fear of death he had only watched the vessel and carefully made sure nothing spilled) and this was a parable about overcoming the affliction of sexual desire.
but I can't find the one about the palace and the rooms. does anyone know where that is from?
