A monk asked Yun Men, "What is talk that goes beyond Buddhas and Patriarchs? "
Men said, "Cake."
Imagine going beyond Buddhas and Patriarchs! Where would that leave you?
(Blessed, blessed).
How about when venerating the ancient teachers and fulfilling the precepts?
(Such a struggle - all those ingredients to manage, all that bother).
When Yunmen lets his belly hang loose, he is companionable and dull, scratching his head alongside the other monkeys who invaded the temple. Poor monks - where can they look for something to hang onto? Even their Master is gone!
'Cake' is the principle, the thief and the messenger all at once.
It is customary to make some administrative comment about r/Zen now, or infuse the post with autobiographical content - but I won't.
