The Reason Zen is not a Religion is That it Has no Need to Be One

In the past, because people could not easily look at things directly, expedients were used. Like explaining the wisdom of ancients using what made it that. Using what people saw as good/evil, holy/profane (the tools of religion) to bring people back to direct, and looking at events, things, others from their direct view.

Buddhism started as same but because of the incredible ignorance of the past a comforter aspect was required. Born to die in darkness is traumatic. As ignorance lessoned and direct looking became a more and more useful part of societies, buddha's teaching (basically, how to dispel ignorance and hold a clear view) became viable on its own again and with the trappings of "a comforter in darkness" no longer of benefit because ignorance is obviously now just a choice, and all beings can discern that it is, it's just "look! look!" again.

"Obviously, obviously."
