Spot the Religious Fraud Predators! Zen edition!

Religious fraud predators, particularly new agers and Dogenists, use particular terms to reject/harass/denigrate Zen students. If you spot these terms, you can bet your granny's wagon that somebody is a genuine religious fraud... and most of them on the internet are active predators in one or more of these ways:

  • encourage you to affiliate with their social media presence, even though they aren't affiliated with anybody themselves
  • sees themselves as spiritually part of a sex predator lineage: www.reddit.com//r/zen/wiki/sexpredators
  • has no online existence outside their r/zen account

These are all huge "be lying online" red flags of course, so let's dive into their common terms!

These "predators" are basically trying to evangelize under false pretenses. It's far less profitable these days because the internet encourages so much information sharing, and forums like r/zen give people direct links to actual Zen resources... but religious fraud predators don't have any other "practice", so they lie online.

 How to catch a predator

I see "Dead people"

Religious Predator Frauds say:

  • Zen Masters are just "dead people", so religious frauds don't have to talk about Zen Masters!
  • Since Zen Masters are all dead, u should obey modern spiritual leaders and learn "history" from them!

Zen Masters say:

  • The Zen tradition is very much driven by dialogue, especially with the past historical teachings... which makes "dead" relative
  • Baizhang:

    • > Saying that one cannot attain buddhahood by cultivation, that there is no cultivation and no realization, that it is not mind, not Buddha, is also Buddha’s teaching—these are words of the complete teaching. Prohibitive words, particularizing words, words of a hundred hundredweight burden. These are words beyond the teachings of the Three Vehicles, words of negative metaphor or instruction, words concerned with weeding out pure things. These are words for someone of station in the Way. These are living words.

Do you "meditation" bro?

Religious Predator Frauds say:

  • "Just sit"
  • love to say "meditation" instead of "sitting meditation based on textual tradition xyz" because they are ashamed of their *sitting meditation bible
  • can't have a conversation that isn't about "prayer meditation"... because there is no getting enlightened in their churches and they can't read at a high school level

Zen Masters say:

Practice "Zen Buddhism"

Religious Predator Frauds say:

  • Bigots love to say Zen is a branch of Buddhism... but then can't define "Buddhism" or say what Buddhists believe.
  • Buddhists can't quote Zen Masters because they don't want to talk about Zen... they want to talk about Buddhism, and "Zen-Buddhism" is a way to change the topic to Buddhism.

Zen Masters say:

  • No Zen Master ever associated Buddhist faiths with Zen.
  • There are dozens of epic burns by Zen Masters pwning "Buddhism": Here's a classic

HIstory is just a bunch of "old books"

Religious Predator Frauds say:

  • Old books... because new books and social media are "truer"
  • If somebody doesn't want to talk about a book, any book? Predator fraud alert
  • If someone lies about writing a high school book report? They lie because they can't... they church can't... their supernatural faith is "beginner's mind illiterate".

Zen Masters say:

  • [Zen Masters wrote books of instruction that are required reading for "Zen students"](www.reddit.com/r/zen/wiki/getstarted)
    • Blue Cliff Record, Book of Serenity (the modern Soto Zen Bible), Measuring Tap, Illusory Man, Gateless Checkpoint, *all show how much reading and writing matter in Zen "teaching"*.

Preceptin' 4 the "weekend"

Religious Predator Frauds say:

  • They don't have to keep precepts on the weekend, esp. the murder and drug addict precepts
    • This just shows you that having a job requires precepts... but religious predator frauds don't think "mastery" is as hard as a 9 to 5.
  • Precepts are laws... and hedonism masters are "free of laws"

Zen Masters say:

  • There are no examples of Zen Masters that didn't have a precept basis: Masters take, give, keep after enlightenment, and account for breaking precepts
  • There are numerous Cases discussing the necessary role of precepts... more than there are for sitting meditation, more than there are for sutra study
