- (Arguably) The second patriarch standing in the snow and cutting off his finger
- Juzhi cutting off the kid's finger.
- Mingben missing a joint of his finger in a portrait.
The cutting off of a finger joint as part of taking the precepts or making a promise has been discussed before... But if we treat each of these three incidents as a part of that tradition it changes the conversation significantly.
Doesn't it?
I do not include Yangshan cutting off his fingers in order to be rejected for farm life labor because it seems unrelated to the precepts and more related to self-mutilation.
Further and this is where it starts to get really weird and speculative... Juzhi got one finger Zen from Tianlong holding up a finger to him... I'm starting to wonder whether or not Tianlong was referencing the second patriarch...
