Zen: Taking Refuge in...what?

As Dongshan was crossing water, he saw his reflection and only then was he suddenly enlightened. Then he produced a verse saying,

Just avoid seeking from others,

Or you'll be estranged from self.

I now go on alone; everywhere I meet It.

It now is really I, I now am not It.

Only when understanding this way

Can one accord with suchness as is.

The 23rd Indian Patriarch Haklena said, "‘If you use Mind to search for Enlightenment, you merit no gains; only by refraining from such a search are you living as a Buddha."

The belief that doing certain forms of asceticism, some form of Buddha-worship, some magic chanting will magically transform you into a Buddha in some form or another...is just plain old insulting to associate with Zen. It also reveals someone who is afraid to read the words of Buddha...which is embarrassing enough.

What about going on alone, without seeking from others?

What are you afraid of?
