Note: (1) - (4) indicate bolded sections of the texts that I feel correspond to each other. (1) in TotEoTT corresponds to (1) in Instant Zen, etc.

Bold text and numerical citation are both mine.

Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching #173

As Zihu was hoeing the ground, he pressed down on the hoe. (4)

Turning around, he looked at Shengguang and said, "It's not that there's nothing to do (3) but if you've got an attitude, you err." (2)

Shengguang immediately asked, "What is there to do?" (1) Zihu kicked him in the chest, knocking him down.

At this, Shengguang was enlightened.

Foyan: Instant Zen

When you have come to me and I see it as soon as you try to focus on anything (1) , that means your inner work has not yet reached the point of flavorlessness.

[...]

If you want to discuss stories, cite past and present, (2) then please go somewhere else; here I have only one-flavor Zen (3), which I therefore call the marrow of all sages.

[...]

My livelihood is the marrow of all the sages; there is not a moment when I am not explaining it to you (4), but you are unwilling to take it up.

_ _ _

I was wondering what kind of attitude Zihu was talking about, and Foyan cleared it up for me.

Notably, Fayan and Zihu are both practicing their livelihoods.
