being clear and honest in our speech is a reoccuring theme in the posts and comments in the sangha.
i'm all for it. as someone raised around a lot of bullshitters, i've picked up some tricks on this sub for shutting down said bullshittery in its myriad forms. much appreciated.
so, let's talk about 'buddhism'.
"buddhism is a made up word"
"all words are made up"
-marilyn monroe
you can't have your cake and eat it too. if you wanna say buddhism is a made up word, then be specific in your speech. when you want to shit talk zen buddhism (AKA what the japanese have done to the dhyana/chan school) then call it that. you can't say buddhism is a made up word in one breath and then say buddhism in the next. thats straight horse shit.
with the culture here, i get it. 'buddhism' is not an acceptable denomination with flocks of yoga pants buddhists pillaging the forum. however, in current times, buddhism refers to the three vehicles of mahayana, theravada, and vajrayana. i feel strange explaining this. i was raised as a vietnamese pure land buddhist and... i don't know what to say here folks. tinh do doesn't agree with all the things vajrayana teachers teach, but my temple encouraged me to go to a tibetan temple when i moved away. i sympathize with buddhists of other sects and its reciprocated. theres a sense of community between the different schools. and, we say the 'b' word. alot. there's real ones out here, so hide your bowls and get your catechism copy pasta ready.
yall dont know dick about buddhism. the most half of you know about the religion i was raised in is a huang bo quote. and thats ok, this isnt the pureland forum. just say what you mean; dogen buddhism, japanese zen buddhism, zen buddhism, whatever.
side note; if you're gonna be a stickler, shouldn't you call it ch'an? zen is the japanese word for it.
